A recent paper in this journal (Hortal et al., 2009) claimed to have evaluated the ED biodiversity surrogates methods of Faith and Walker (1994 , 1996, and to have provided evidence for poor performance of the continuous ED method.
If we consider his overall strategy, it seems that Pomponazzi was drawing on the distinction between methods of science and methods of faith, by means of which 13th-century secular masters of philosophy at the University of Paris such as Boethius of Dacia had claimed the freedom to pursue their philosophical enquiries without theological constraints.
By adapting the philosophical method to the data of faith, theology attempts to "confound the adversaries of the faith," "strengthen those weak in their faith," and "delight those whose faith is complete".
Other speakers at the same meeting, including local parents, claimed the new teaching system was "a recipe for chaos", and that giving control of local education to a Swedish group with "unproven methods" was "huge leap of faith on a hope and a prayer".
"I have a lot of faith in the methods they've used, and I think it's a very rigorously conducted study," says Nicholas Diakopoulos, a computer scientist at the University of Maryland, College Park, who was not involved in the research.
"Teachers don't use those methods more because they have a lack of faith in the Internet," he said.
The requirement that some religious concepts of creation, adhered to presumably by some Tennessee citizens, be excluded on such grounds in favor of the Bible of the Jews and the Christians represents still another method of preferential treatment of particular faiths by state law and, of course, is forbidden by the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment.
Scientists do their work with a kind of faith as well: faith in the scientific method, faith in the orderliness of the universe, faith even in their colleagues.
