This scheme is called back-light compensation and is discussed further in Section 6. Figure 1 Multizone metering mode used by several camera manufacturers, adapted from [1, 3].
This metering mode is also called honeycomb or electroselective pattern metering, as the camera measures the light intensity in several points of the image and then combines the results to find the settings for the best exposure.
You can then control a whole variety of functions on the camera like metering mode, aperture, exposure compensation and loads more.
If it doesn't, try these settings: Metering Mode: Evaluative.
If you have the option, set your metering mode to "Matrix", "Evaluative" or similar and have fun.
The Metering Mode on your camera determines the lighting conditions, and your digital camera's "brain" then determines the best shutter speed and aperture that should be used to create the type of picture you want.
