Mass communication through the use of both print and electronic media serves as a means of reaching the population with the messages of the program.
Having high education also means they are an audience who can be reached with the messages of the program and thus they are more likely to change their behaviour.
The key messages of the program which were reinforced throughout the intervention were: Increase knowledge about EM recommendations and outcomes of EM use; Increase awareness and implementation of strategies to participate in healthy levels of EM use; and Teach families how to practice behaviour modification such as planning and monitoring.
Eight questions related to the key nutritional messages of the program will be drawn from the full AES survey (milk type, fruit intake, vegetable intake, takeaway food intake, meals whilst watching television, sweetened drink intake, fruit juice intake, and snack frequency).
Hence, the main message of the intervention program consisted of 'maintaining energy balance', and extra attention was paid to distinct messages with regard to unhealthy dieting practices, such as anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa.
The dominant message of the Ugandan program, as is well known, and which was well known at the time both throughout Uganda and throughout Africa (as the Uganda message) was "Zero Grazing," alluding to the traditional way cattle were fenced in, or tied to a stick to limit grazing outside their own pasture.
We believe the SMS messaging component of the program was integral to the success of the 2007 AHC intervention and will continue to explore the use of this tool.
The message of these programs is clear--while school can be an isolating place, it can also be a place of remarkable community.
Probably most importantly, the intensity of messaging of the Uganda program was far above any other program at the time.
