Never mind that they'd spent all of "Vile" reminiscing about how awful they were to each other in the past, laughing fondly over all the terrible things they'd said and done... Revisiting such merry memories is a favorite pastime on the Upper East Side, in between Vespa rides and reheating your own sloppy seconds, just FYI.
There was a time when sports stars would just appear in TV shows or movies like Jack Dempesy in The Prizefighter and the Lady, (1933) or Joe DiMaggio in Manhattan Merry-Go-Round, (1937) but as sports transformed from pastime to a full on entertainment industry unto itself, the cameo roles were too small for this new bread of popular culture idols.
People in publishing wonder if there's a modern way to attract even more merry gamesters to the genre, which they don't consider merely a time filler, but rather an intellectual pastime.
