SOME might view the stories of BeeBop and Tumbles and Little Girl and Misty as mere feel-good tales: accounts of disabled animals helped by humans are, after all, easy to sentimentalize.
The artfully decadent retro Asian décor, the waitresses in slinky silk mandarin dresses -- it all spells the kind of restaurant where mere mortals feel worthless, and the food does not even pretend to be anything more than a fashion accessory.
But the in-house computer guru is snide (on a good day), surly and condescending, and seems to delight in making you, the mere user, feel like a fool.
The eighteenth-century philosopher Thomas Reid held a view of this sort: Reid argued that experiences have a sensory part that is a mere raw feel, and that is independent of judgments about how things are in the environment.
If a mere phenomenal feel seems not enough to be pleasure on account of its leaving unexplained or even inexplicable why we pursue it (§3.2, 2 and n. 34 below) and if a rational perception of its goodness (Goldstein 1980 , 1989 2002) seems too old-fashioned or ad hoc to supply this lack (see §3.2, 2), perhaps these backed by a physiological nature with its full complement of causal powers will do.
Do mere mortals feel the same?
Mere minutes feel like hours.
