We report on memory outcome in a sample in whom we previously reported long-term improvements in intellectual function (Skirrow et al., 2011).
We devised an algorithm using asymmetry indices of preoperative memory encoding activation in the anterior medial temporal lobe, language lateralization and performance on preoperative neuropsychological assessment to predict clinically significant postoperative verbal and visual memory outcome in individual subjects.
Linear regression analysis was used to determine clinical predictors [age at seizure onset, duration, current seizure status, lesion type (DNT or hippocampal sclerosis), current anti-epileptic medication] of FSIQ-independent memory outcome in the surgical cohort.
Together, these results suggest that specific item encoding (e.g., hippocampus) and source encoding (e.g., PFC) processes play a critical role in determining true and false memory outcome in misinformation paradigms.
The current postoperative follow-up study was concordant with these findings as greater pre- than postoperative activation within the ipsilateral posterior hippocampus correlated with better verbal memory outcome in patients with left TLE.
