Mr. Libeskind's "Memory Foundations" featured a memorial site sinking 70 feet down to bedrock with the slurry wall exposed.
Seen around the world, the Libeskind concept, called Memory Foundations, showed an array of towers around the memorial area, rising to a 1,776-foot 1,776-foot at the northweskyscraperof the site, which Governor Pataki named the Freedom Tower.
It was Mr. Libeskind's Memory Foundations plan of December 2002 that awakened the possibility of setting the memorial on bedrock, 70 feet below ground, framed in part by the surviving foundation walls of the trade center.
To be sure, certain broad elements of Mr. Libeskind's "Memory Foundations" remain: a site divided by Fulton and Greenwich Streets into unequal quadrants, a memorial precinct in the southwest corner and an L-shaped array of office towers along Church and Vesey Streets, the highest pinnacle at the northwest corner.
The Ground Zero project, Memory Foundations, has a Wedge of Light and a Park of Heroes.
