Advanced Micro, based in Sunnyvale, Calif., has built a cellphone memory division that provides more than half of its sales.
At $327 million, sales for Advanced Micro's memory division were up 150percentt over those in the quarter a year earlier.
Although the memory division of Samsung Electronics still counts on the 128-megabit chip for more than half its revenue, said Jon Kang, senior vice president for product planning, "over all, we still make money while others lose".
Saifun was clobbered on Oct. 13 after it announced a significant loss of business from Infineon's Qimonda memory division.
"We plan to accelerate our innovation in Nand," says Samsung's Chang-Gyu Hwang, chief of the memory division.
"You've got to pick up the data from memory and put it in the processor in order to work with it," says Graham Kirsch, chief architect of Micron's active memory division.
"We can get synergy from our chips and liquid crystal display screens, as we did with the FLCD-TV [a pricey projection TV],"says Chang Gyu Hwang, head of Samsung's memory division, which produces the chips.
Ed Doller, chief technology officer at Intel's flash-memory division, says the company is following the progress of OUM technology closely.
Piper Jaffray reiterated a "market perform" rating on AMD, saying the company's microprocessor unit looks strong, but the flash-memory division still shows weakness.
In 1997 TI began consolidating its business by selling its defense-related division to the Raytheon Company, its memory chip division to Micron Technologies Inc., and its software division to Sterling Software.
