The recent discovery of significant offshore natural gas reserves in the Aphrodite field, south of the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea, changes the energy landscape in the greater Mediterranean-Middle East-Caucasian Region.
Observed data from the MEDAR climatology also point to a Mediterranean-encompassing change in the late 1980s: a closer look at the temperature and salinity surface-to-bottom time series for 1950 2000 evidences a clear change in the late 1980 (Fig. 1 and Fig. 2 in [61].
This article presents a collaborative synthesis of data, some of which have been collected and analysed by the authors, as the MEDFLOOD (MEDiterranean sea-level change and projection for future FLOODing) community, and highlights key sites, data, concepts and ongoing debates.
One of the first challenges to projecting the impacts of climate change on mediterranean ecosystems worldwide is defining the MCE.
"One of the most important findings is that everything that has been discovered so far is indeed compatible with the area where the authorities are searching," lead researcher Eric Jansen of the Euro-Mediterranean Center on Climate Change in Italy told AFP. There have been previous regional, country, and within-country scale conservation planning studies assessing protected areas, land cover changes, and biodiversity across the mediterranean biome, e.g., in the Mediterranean Basin [17], [23], Chile [11] and South Africa [24], which have utilized regional scale taxonomic data, e.g., reptiles and amphibians of the Mediterranean Basin [25].
This analysis provides the most comprehensive assessment to date of how climate change is projected to impact mediterranean climates in all five mediterranean regions across the globe and the implication of the climate change for adaptation potential of the native biota.
However, if the areas projected to have a stable or expanded MCE are disproportionately converted, this will exacerbate the negative impacts of climate change on biodiversity in the mediterranean biome.
