Those without medication status recorded did not differ substantially from those who did on any major clinical variable but were more likely to be of Pacific Island ethnicity (28 vs. 18%) and from the lowest socioeconomic quintile (47 vs. 39%).
Exclusion of participants using prescribed medication or with CMV-positive status did not change any of the aforementioned results, nor did the exclusion of participants who used drugs by injection.
Because only individuals with COPD took bronchodilator medications, models that were stratified by disease status did not control for bronchodilator medications.
