The median SF-36 physical component score (PCS) was 54 (49–56, CI: 45 56) and the median mental component score (MCS) was 56 (54 58, CI: 55 58).
The median SF-12 Mental component score (SF-12MCS) was 53.00 (IQR 18.80), and the median SF-12 physical component score (SF-12PCS) was 29.57 (IQR 11.86).
SF-36 scores also displayed a significant difference between treatment groups for both the aggregate physical component (median change = 9.25; p = <0.0001) and the aggregate mental component (median change = 4.26; p = 0.0045) and for all domains except vitality (Table 3).
At baseline, A-cohorts were more severely affected than C-cohorts for 8 SF-36 scales, with median differences ranging from 0.05 SD (Role Physical, Bodily Pain) to 0.54 (General Health), while C-cohorts were more severely affected for 2 scales, with median differences of 0.14 (Physical Functioning) and 0.40 (Physical Component Summary).
For example, DeOreo has demonstrated that dialysis patients with a physical component summary score below the cohort median were twice as likely to die and 1.5 times more likely to be hospitalized compared to patients with scores above the median.
At week 30, a significant improvement from baseline in the physical component score of the SF-36 (median change from baseline 7.6 vs 8.5, respectively) was observed in both treatment groups.
Median effect sizes ranged from -0.05 (Role Emotional) to 0.27 (Physical Component Summary), while the proportion of outcome comparisons with minimal-to-small differences (-0.49 to +0.49) ranged from 67% (Bodily Pain) to 93% (Role Emotional).
Odds ratios show association between biomarker levels (baseline or changes from baseline to week 4) and whether FACIT-F, SF-36 mental component summary score, or SF-36 physical component summary score was above or below the median.
The physical component summary scores did not differ between the groups (median area under the curve 0.4. for the combined larvae group, −0.5 for the hydrogel group, P=0.25), indicating no evidence of a difference between the two groups (fig 4).
