We analyzed the 4,460 cemented medial Oxford III implants that were used from 1999 to 2012; this is the most commonly used UKA implant in Norway.
Specific radiographic inclusion criteria are: (i) Kellgren-Lawrence grade ≥ 2 [ 63]; (ii) mechanical axis angle of < 181° for females or < 183° for males indicating varus alignment; (iii) medial tibiofemoral joint narrowing grade > lateral tibiofemoral joint narrowing grade [ 64]; and (iv) medial compartment osteophyte grade ≥ lateral compartment osteophyte grade [ 64].
All patients were operated with the Oxford phase III medial unicompartmental knee (Biomet Ltd., Bridgend, UK).
The functional MRI task consisted of active 20 s blocks of right sided: (i) repetitive isometric handgrip; (ii) electrical median nerve stimulation at the medial wrist; or (iii) electrical tibial nerve stimulation at the medial malleolus.
Three standardised, 3-second cine loops, were recorded pre-biopsy from i) the midline SPP pouch ii) the medial SPP pouch iii) the lateral SPP pouch corresponding to region of synovial tissue sampling with the knee in 30 degrees of flexion.
