To compare two methods of weaning from mechanical ventilation - once-daily trial of spontaneous ventilation (ODT) and pressure support ventilation (PSV) - analyzing (1) total duration of mechanical ventilation, (2) duration of weaning and (3) frequency of successful weaning.
Possible explanations for this may include a major derecruitment at the time of laryngoscopy resulting in collapsed compliance once mechanical ventilation is started or resumed, inappropriate ventilator settings after intubation and/or excessive permissive hypercapnia as illustrated by the similar values observed at the different time points for delta pressure and for respiratory rate.
