For mechanical characterization of nanowires using AFM nanoindentation, we have utilized commercially available AFM (Innova, Santa Barbara, CA, USA) with Nanodrive controller (Veeco, Santa Barbara, CA, USA) and closed-loop scanner.
For one of these solutions a metallurgical and mechanical characterization was performed using stress/strain and bending tests comparing the behaviour of base material and FSW butt joints.
Different mechanical characterization techniques were used to determine the mechanical performance, including: tensile stress strain, double cantilever beam (DCB) mode-I fracture toughness and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA).
