Previous studies reported inconsistent findings about the effects of footwear on running economy, which is a surrogate measure of running performance.
Still being able to describe the VO2 related to a particular velocity of running provides a useful way of comparing individuals, or any individual with him or herself under various conditions, and this VO2 gives a measure of running economy.
Another strength is the applied data collection method, as the use of GPS recently has been validated as an objective measure of running participation both in relation to quantification of running distance in kilometers (Nielsen et al., 2013b) and of running speed (Townshend et al., 2008).
