Subsequently, the measured flux changes linked to improved production performance were projected into the in silico flux space.
In order to test the accuracy of GX-FBA's predictions, we analyzed a set of experimentally measured flux changes for yeast growing on 4 different carbon sources [ 50].
Our results show that for an optimal GX-FBA objective function, our predictions on average display a percentage error relative to experimentally measured flux changes of only e = 21%.

To compare GX-FBA with the experimental data, we used the measured flux values to calculate the relative changes (d) in each reaction's flux activity as the eukaryote transitions between different growth conditions (see Methods).
For the mutant example, which was less accurate, a reduction of the residual value was achieved by small changes to the measured fluxes.
It is notable that on the one hand PGI exhibits the lowest change in both the measured fluxes and the flux efficiencies, while on the other hand, the PPP fluxes (G6Pdh, tald, tk1 and tk2) exhibit the highest change, regardless of the carbon source (fructose and sucrose).
The advantage of this method is that it uses the observed changes (between two conditions) in a small set of experimentally measured fluxes such as respiration, carbon source uptake rate, secondary metabolite production etc. to infer the probabilities of flux change in each of the fluxes in the genome-scale metabolic network.
In B. napus, the extension of the elementary flux mode analysis to an enlarged metabolic network still resulted in a clear relationship between the change in the coefficients and that of the measured fluxes.
