We refer to [25] for recent results regarding minimization of the mean search time for single targets.
Can the mean search time τ be computed?
At the end of the experiment, when the animals had learnt their way through the maze, large-brained males were on average nearly twice as fast at finding the female than the small-brained males (mean search time: 86±14 vs. 47±14 s; GLMMday12 14: brain size selection line: F 1,99 = 9.4, P = 0.003).
The purpose of starting the search with a large number N of independent spermatozoa seems to be the decrease in the mean search time τ to τ/ N. In other biological systems, finding a small hidden target by random search is often achieved by a large redundancy in the number of searchers.
Furthermore, because the mean search time during the last 3 days was more than 7 times (86 and 47 s; see above) than the predicted mean average time based on previous analyses on these lines (7.7 s; see Methods), the difference in maze performance is unlikely to be caused by differences in swimming ability between the large- and small-brained lines.

In the text, we report mean search times of correct target-present trials (although we present data for target-absent trials in the figures).
b Average search time.
Less object candidates also mean a faster visual search time (see e.g. [ 26]).
They can extend the search time.
The reaction times were then averaged across the observers by taking the mean of the individual search times.
