The acquired three-dimensional reconstructions were morphologically analysed by a self-made computer analytical tool, which estimated the mean form factor and the average effective radius of the reconstructed metal inclusions.
It is important to establish whether the increase in the mean effective hydrodynamic radius is indeed due to particle aggregation or molecular adsorption.
For the intermediate dissolution regime, identified to be the optimal regime for increasing permeability with small changes in porosity, the increase of permeability results from a large increase in the mean effective hydraulic radius of the sample.
When the spinneret temperature was increased from 25 °C to 50 °C, the mean effective pore radius and the pure water permeability were simultaneously decreased, which was due to the formation of a denser surface skin and a more compact interface between the two layers.
To design NF membranes with a narrow pore size suitable for the PEI cross-linking modification, a critical mean effective pore radius (rp) of 1.5 nm was found for the substrates and the resultant PEI cross-linked membrane can be used effectively for heavy metal removal.
In addition to exhibiting a higher rejection of divalent anions than monovalent anions, and a lower rejection of divalent cations at pH 7.0, the newly developed NF dual-layer hollow fiber membranes with methanol as additive has a relatively high pure water permeability of 11.93 l m−2 bar−1 h−1 with a mean effective pore radius of 0.63 nm.
Moreover, the NF properties studied revealed that the optimized BHAC PIP composite membrane having a mean effective pore radius of 0.44 nm and molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of 570 Da exhibits high efficiencies for many NF applications including rejection of divalent cations, removal of basic dyes and selective separation of mixed cations.
Experimental results indicate that the high rejections are owing to the following factors: (1) a narrow pore size distribution membrane with a mean effective pore radius of 0.32 nm and a molecular weight cut off (MWCO) of 249 Da; (2) an enhanced Donnan exclusion effect due to the amphoteric PBI charge property; (3) low adsorptions of heavy metals on the PBI surface due to its hydrophilic nature.
Comparing the experimental j−η curves with the theoretical equations, one could estimate a set of the microscopic parameters of transfer, including the mean jump distance, the effective radius of charge localization, the jumping attempt frequency, and the mean height of energy barriers.
The evolution equations of each precipitate, described by its effective radius, mean chemical composition and the aspect ratio, are derived by application of the thermodynamic extremal principle.
