The coefficient of variation for outerwood density within each stand based on a single core per tree averaged 7.5% and did not vary with mean density (coefficients of variation averaged 7.8, 7.5, 7.3, and 7.6% for stands with mean wood density < 250, 250 400, 400 450, and >450 kg m−3 respectively).
Overall, the population level model explained about 56%% of the variation in mean density.
However, more importantly, the variation in mean density does not increase when expressed as a percentage of the mean density.
Such variation in log mean density might be achieved by varying the concentrations of rif, phage, and KB nutrients.
