Average tree diameters were smaller than in the past, but mean basal area and stocking remained similar over time because of the increase in density in current forests.
Fig. 4 Grouping of tree species based on maximum size (mean dbh of the 10%% biggest trees) and average growth rate (mean basal area growth, cm2/year) during the 25-year measurement interval 1972-1997.
In all three cases, the average of the simulation estimates of the standard error of the tree mean basal area was close to that of the actual standard error of the 50,000 simulation estimates of the mean.
With an area sampling frame for both Methods 1 and 2 and when sampling from a list sampling frame, the mean of the simulation estimates of the individual tree mean basal area was the same (at least to the nearest 0.001 m2) as the true mean, supporting the contention that all three methods were unbiased estimators as expected for simple random samples.
Table 1 Results from 50,000 simulations of inventory of the complexly arranged population of individual trees (Fig. 1a) to estimate individual tree mean basal area, number of individuals in the population and population total basal area, together with their standard errors.
Mean basal area, however, increased by less than 20%.

Fig. 9 The weighted mean of relative standard errors for mean volume, basal area and stems per ha as a function of plot radius (maximum radius for relascope plots).
The objective of this research was to develop models of Douglas-fir mean top height, basal area, volume, mean diameter (at breast height), green crown height and stand density from LiDAR and stand information.
The mean tree basal area increment (cm2/year) and the mean of the 10%% biggest diameter trees (cm) are presented for the nine species that are represented by at least 50 individuals.
Mean top height, green crown height, volume, mean diameter, basal area, and stand density, respectively, ranged, six-fold, 17-fold, 226-fold, six-fold, 73-fold and 12-fold across the plot series (Table 2).
The final models constructed for mean top height, green crown height, total stem volume, mean diameter, basal area, and stand density had R2 values of 0.85, 0.79, 0.86, 0.86, 0.84 and 0.55, respectively, with root mean square errors of 1.02 m, 0.427 m, 20.2 m3 ha-1, 13.9 mm, 3.81 m2 ha-1 and 355 stems ha-1, respectively.
