For the spatial mean activity analysis, we averaged the intensity of all voxels inside an anatomically defined region.

For 42 cells with early discrimination (50 250 ms from stimulus onset; Fig. 7 E, G ), we compared mean activity in this early analysis period for target corrects, nontarget corrects, and nontarget errors.
In order to perform this analysis the mean activity coefficients of the salt in the presence of DMSO were experimentally determined and the electrical double layer parameters calculated by using Fawcett's function.

Although analysis of spatial mean activity can predict score improvements to some extent, it provides merely summary statistics of the activity in an ROI, ignoring subtle differences in activity patterns.
