This syndrome occurs when individuals are unsuccessful in using coping strategies; stressors remain, which may lead to chronic stress [ 10].
Studies reveal that patients with cancer are actively seeking supportive treatments and may use distinct coping strategies that might be helpful to extend survival time.
9 10 Nevertheless, this knowledge has not been translated to those with advanced disease, who may use different coping styles compared with those in the earlier stages of illness.
As Aldwin [ 12] suggested, older adults may use more efficient coping strategies which can be very adaptive in later life.
It has been used in several studies in different conditions [ 24, 25], and studies show that women may use different kinds of coping strategies than men [ 26, 27].
For example, when adolescents are in challenging or emotionally demanding situations, they may use less sophisticated cognitive coping strategies for handling the situations (Kingery et al. 2006; Oetzel and Scherer 2003).
People with early-life trauma may use alcohol to help cope with trauma-related symptoms.
However, relative to individuals who experienced less severe sexual abuse, individuals who experienced more severe sexual abuse may use different strategies to cope with their sexual abuse experience(s).
Individuals may use plastic response mechanisms to cope with drought conditions, while species may undergo a range shift or adapt to the drought conditions in the long term.
Thus, for both men and women, those who experienced more severe forms of sexual abuse may use alcohol or drugs to cope with the sexual abuse, which, in turn, may lead to the exchange of sex for money or drugs, and/or to a greater number of sexual partners and episodes of unprotected sex.
