Because of the much greater genetic diversity in humans compared with specific strains of laboratory animals, the range of expected human response may include subgroups that are less, equally, or more sensitive than the animals used in the experimental studies.
As such, the set of genes identified as being co-expressed with others at a given time or state may include subgroups of genes under multiple levels of transcriptional control; further, it has been found that co-expressed genes tend to be robust toward change [ 18] (and thus more readily identifiable) when they have stable regulatory programs [ 17].
Mathematical models are a simplification of reality, so they would not include all variables which characterize these groups: ours for example could incorporate dependence on age, gender and sexual behaviour while other models may include specific subgroups, characterized by different routes of HIV transmission.
Other patients who are eligible for early treatment with this drug may include a subgroup of patients with severe community-acquired pneumonia admitted to the intensive care unit (i.e. Streptococcus pneumoniae).

Definitions vary with regard to the factor(s) used to define subgroups; they may include genetics, age, family history or gender.
When considering whether to include this subgroup in the target sample, one should therefore consider whether a relatively large subgroup that may include a number of relatively mild cases of conditions such as allergies and asthma is appropriate to the purpose for which the data are being used.
Significantly lower rates of self-reported smoking further suggest the presence of subgroups with self-imposed lifestyle modifications that may include changed eating habits and diet.
