The difference in mobility between people with and without cerebral palsy is, for example, believed to increase with age during childhood and adolescence, but an individual with cerebral palsy may, however, also cope with the disease with time.

Sick leave due to minor mental health problems is considered not only to be a sign of failure to cope, but may also involve elements of avoidance coping.
