For each reconstructed dataset, the RCs were calculated, based on the maximum voxel intensity in each hot sphere.
We did not use the mean, minimum, maximum (voxel intensity) or Lipschitz (smoothly varying background subtraction) filters.
These measurements were repeated following application of the appropriate SUVref filter to each of the datasets prior to measurement of the maximum voxel intensity in each hot sphere.
The in vivo tumor volume was assessed by setting the lower threshold to 90% of the maximum voxel intensity of the tumor using the IRW program (Siemens, Erlangen, Germany).
This analysis was repeated using the same set of 500 hotspots, following application of the appropriate SUVref filter to each reconstruction prior to measurement of the maximum voxel intensity, to compute percentage change in SUVref (Δ SUVref).
SUVmax (maximum voxel intensity within the volumetric region), SUVmean (average voxel intensity), MTV, and TLG for primary tumor were calculated.

The contralateral maximal voxel intensities were used to fix the pathological threshold.
For all methods the maximum intensity (i.e. maximum voxel value) within a sphere was identified.
g I has the following form, (2) where I(p) is the voxel intensity value at location p and Imax is the maximum intensity of the entire image I, respectively.
In other words, we require that the average voxel intensity in the ball or radius r centered on a local maximum be above θ1.
As shown in Figure 3, from the histogram h where h(i) is the number of local maximum voxels that have the intensity i, we first obtain i max = argmax i h(i), the intensity value that has the highest frequency, and i min =argmin i h(i), the intensity with the lowest frequency min h(i).
