In one case (SwanBS02, which had the largest colonies, Table 1), there was a marginally significant difference in growth rate (P = 0.092, Fig. 3B), which may signal that we approached the limitation of the method with respect to maximum colony size (∼0.7 mm, ESD) and/or study duration (6 days).
Maximum colony size analysis.

We then searched for data on average and maximum mature colony size (worker number).
We also performed a similar analysis using the maximum observed colony size rather than mean colony size for each species (Additional file 1: Table S4).
Our results also contrast with a recent review that failed to find a significant relationship between maximum growth rate and average colony size across many colonial green or cyanobacterial species [23].
ABC is a simple evolutionary algorithm using only common control parameters such as colony size and maximum cycle number.
The alternative analyses using a different phylogeny (Additional file 1: Table S3) or maximum size as a proxy for colony size (Additional file 1: Table S4) give similar results.
This test colony size resembles the average sized colony (5.41 females/colony) from this latitude (Pruitt and Riechert 2009c).
In addition, it has long been hypothesised that neighbouring colonies of conspecifics will spatially segregate in foraging areas to reduce intra-specific competition and that colony size may be limited by available habitat within the maximum foraging range (Adams, 2001).
Furthermore, when including colony size and nest site in a model predicting relatedness, both factors are significant when using the maximum likelihood value for λ in the PGLS model (Table 2).
The colony morphology, colony-forming efficiency and colony size were observed and compared.
