Optimization of this system for the maximal production yields can be accomplished by modulating the temperature, to affect the rate of caspase activation and to favor the accumulation of ProIL-18, prior to its proteolytic processing by activated caspase.
Interestingly, maximal product yields were obtained under nitrate-limited and oxygen-depleted conditions (YP/X = 0.075), which gives a further impulse to examine anaerobic Surfactin production.
Furthermore, the maximal possible production yields predicted by OptKnock and RobustKnock for these chemicals are significantly lower than the optimal yields that may theoretically be achieved by the biosensor-based approach (Figure 5b), testifying for the potential added value of the latter approach over current rational design methods.
Two of these designs yield maximal succinate production rate, both of which are for E. coli.
The overall maximal hydrogen production rate and yield were 7.66 l/h/l and 3.88 mol H2/mol sucrose, respectively, both of them occurred at 40∘C.
