The percentage sequence similarity (PSS) between two sequences was calculated by:
First, we employed a motif finder, part of Mod Tools [75], to locate potential HSEs by searching for the 8-nucleotide sequence TTCNNGAA, allowing for a maximum of 4 mutations and screening for 8 bp sequences with a matrix score of at least 70.
The cut-off was set to a core score of 1.0 and a matrix score of 0.9 [23].
We only used those TFBSs that are mapped with a core- and matrix score of greater than or equal to 0.9.
