Studies showing that MMP inhibition attenuates ECM accumulation in rat allograft nephropathy [ 62], anti-Thy 1.1 nephritis [ 63] and other experimental inflammatory renal diseases would suggest that matrix degradation plays at least some role in this process.
Plotting bone matrix elasticity against the estimated mineral volume fraction (Fig. 4) shows most data are toward the upper H S bound which would suggest that the apatite matrix is acting as a mechanically rigid matrix with soft protein inclusions.
