First, we quantified male mating ability by scoring the proportion of matings that resulted in cross-progeny.
Generally, mating ability is repressed in diploid cells due to the presence of both mating-type alleles, but a diploid bearing only one copy of chromosome III can express the haploid mating programme, becoming a so-called 'diploid mater'.
