In the fall, Reubens, as Pee-wee, hosted "Saturday Night Live," and Hartman and John Paragon were hired to help write material for the episode.
It features guest appearances from George Harrison, Patrick Stewart and Phil Hartman, although these are all clips and none of them recorded original material for the episode.
Wharton praised the casting, describing it as "against type", which he claimed worked well because the material of the episode was more serious and dramatic than usual for the series.
In regards to the sensitive material in the episode, actress Naoko Mori stated that whilst reading the script she "kind of forgot it was Torchwood and [that] it was science-fiction".
From June 8 to June 15, as part of its "Countdown to Futurama" event, Comedy Central Insider, Comedy Central's news outlet, released various preview materials for the episode, including a storyboard of Bender and Hermes' entry into the Central Bureaucracy and character designs for the war reenactment sequence.
Additionally, the network had partnered with the Anti-Defamation League and Color of Change to produce educational material that would accompany the episodes, and a "town-hall special" would follow.
According to press materials, the March 4 episode of "Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce" sees Big Freedia performing in Atlanta as part of her biggest-ever tour.
