The average highest body mass indexes reported in this study (24.9 and 26.5 kg/m2 for cases and controls, respectively) were in the same range reported for subjects' body mass index 5 years previously in a recent large US study (25.5 and 25.8 kg/m2 for cases and controls, respectively) [ 16] and participants in the California Teachers Study in 1995 (24.8 kg/m) [ 23].
And much of the focus of anti-obesity efforts — listing calories at restaurants, banning cupcakes in schools, sending students home with body mass index "report cards" — are decried by eating disorder activists, who say such measures can encourage anorexia or bulimia.
States like Arkansas and Michigan, for example, have adopted similar weight-tracking programs and body mass index report cards.
Measurements included reported walking or bicycling for errands (i.e., transport activity) and other outdoor aerobic activities measured via the CHAMPS questionnaire: accelerometry-based moderate-to-vigorous physical activity; reported body mass index; and reported lower extremity mobility impairment measured via the Late-Life Function and Disability Instrument.
