Interestingly, MDA-MB-231 cells, while exhibiting rigidity-dependent proliferation, did not express detectable levels of E-cadherin at either 150 Pa or 19200 Pa (data not shown), suggesting that these cells, while morphologically similar to A549 cells on soft and rigid substrates, do not alter the expression of this epithelial marker when exposed to a soft microenvironment.
