Further studies are needed to examine if GAP-43, a neuronal marker exclusively expressed in regenerating nerve axons and in PTs in the rat, could be used as a marker of new PTs in the regenerating rat liver, in order to accommodate the elongating nerve fibers, and further as a marker of new liver lobules.
