The control group consisted of healthy blood donors with normal aminotransferases, normal blood counts, and negative markers for virus hepatitis and HIV (23 males/17 females, median age: 55 years).
However, these analyses have been conducted with relatively small sample sizes (especially in the wildlife species) and to our knowledge, no study has yet estimated CST rates using bacterial genetic markers (for viruses see Streicker et al. 2010).
In October 2009, two 3 months after an outbreak of a febrile disease with joint pain on the eastern coast of Madagascar, we assessed serologic markers for chikungunya virus (CHIKV), dengue virus (DENV), and Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) in 1,244 pregnant women at 6 locations.
The observed single-round infectivity rescue is in accordance with combined immunostaining and single-molecule measurements, that showed that only ∼23% of capsid (a marker for functional viruses) containing virions also exhibited detectable levels of IN-mTPF1 (data not shown).

This marker discriminates for viruses of all of the host genera investigated here, and was used to resolve their phylogenetic status.
In a liver biopsy of a patient who lacked serological markers for hepatitis viruses, hepatitis B virus was detected by in situ hybridization.
Although serological markers for hepatitis virus were negative, elevated levels of liver enzymes (AST, 39 U/L; ALT, 38 U/L; γGTP, 672 U/L and ALP, 1886 U/L) were found.
In sum, electrophoretic mobility is a useful, selectable phenotypic marker for studies of virus sex and could itself be an indicator of important determinants of virus fitness.
