It has become the most commonly used marker for animal DNA barcoding since it was first proposed more than a decade ago13.
To date (January 2006), ca. 5,000 complete CYB entries are available for mammals in public data bases, and furthermore, another mitochondrial gene – the cytochrome c oxidase I – has been proposed as the marker for animal DNA barcoding [ 10].
