Cytoplasmic staining specific for the epithelial cytokeratin and for vimentin, a mesenchymal marker expressed also in the epithelial RCC cells, both in vivo and in vitro [ 18, 25], and specific expression of the proximal tubular marker CD13 were observed in more than 90% of cells, as assessed by immunofluorescence and FACS analysis, according to the proximal tubular origin of ccRCC.
Some of the fin blastema markers were unexpectedly highly expressed also at oblong stage.
EMT-marker expressing cells are also abundantly present in the basal epithelium (BE), and Rbm cells stain positively for both epithelial and mesenchymal markers [18].
Interestingly, the relapse melanomas showed an increased frequency of spindle-shaped tumor cells strongly expressing the nerve growth factor receptor, NGFR (CD271), a marker also expressed by human melanoma initiating cells.
