MAP-2 immunoreactivity was preserved in the unaffected control hemisphere (Fig. 5D), as shown by the homogeneous staining across cortical regions whereas the MAP-2 signal was markedly reduced in brain areas supplied by the occluded MCA (Fig. 5D).
