Shawn Stover, interim chief of secondary schools for D.C. Public Schools, noted that many high school students improved on the test even if they didn't pass it.
According to a stakeholder in Kakuma "students have started applying the skills in different NGOs as teachers, social workers, work supervisors and managers… many students have improved working conditions at their NGOs and communities".
Given that 100 students used fewer correct concepts on the post test, but many of those same students improved on those same concepts in the short-answer questions, we believe that the study design may have caused some fatigue.
Accordingly, we were pleased to see that so many of our young students improved in their understanding of this topic, and not at all surprised that some of our big ideas remained beyond the reach of many of them.
Partly because that policy was softened, for example with the addition of an appeals process, and partly because many students' test scores improved after a special summer school program, fewer third graders are held back now than before the new promotion rules were put in place.
Many people just talk about helping students improve their reading comprehension levels.

Notwithstanding these challenges, however, our pilot study illustrated that the intervention was culturally-relevant, promising and effective in improving many students' dietary behaviours and determinants of behavioural change.
