Finally, blacks were locked out of many occupations; Irish laborers dominated such jobs as cartmen and longshoremen and made sure that blacks could not join their ranks.
Many are well-paying occupations such as software engineering, advanced manufacturing, or medical technicians that support growth industries.
Four times as many young women worked in occupations such as hairdressing, leisure and travel, said the report.
For example, many of the lowest-paid occupations, such as bar and restaurant staff, hairdressers, and cashiers, are mainly private sector jobs, while there are a larger proportion of graduate-level and professional occupations in the public sector.

Many of the more heavily unionised occupations, such as teaching or railway work, can cause considerable disruption if workers down tools.

Certain individuals seem, however, to handle longstanding stress better than others and remain in exposed occupations such as ambulance services for many years.
