Evidence of unmet need is reflected in the fact that some adolescents and other young persons lack adequate knowledge and understanding of the reproductive process, that many harbor misconceptions such as the belief that mosquitoes can transmit HIV infection, and false claims that use of contraceptives can cause infertility [ 4, 5].
Many of these misconceptions, such as a belief in "Lamarckian" evolution, are based on a misunderstanding of inheritance.
For example, studies on student acceptance of natural selection before and after instructional interventions found that many of the common misconceptions, such as Lamarckian inheritance or "need -based geneed -basede, can be corrected througeneticeted instruchange(Bishop and Anderson, 1990; Nehm and Reilly, 2007; Abraham et al., 2009).
Instead, the NRC standards tend to minimize the ease of changing such ideas, e.g., "Many misconceptions about the process of natural selection can be changed through instruction" (p. 184).
Many Nigerian adolescents have poor understanding of the timing of conception; others harbor misconceptions such as the belief that a slipped condom can cause stomach discomfort and infertility [ 5- 7].
In addition, misconceptions such as: "LECO TOC is better than Rock-Eval 6 TOC", expressed by many users, are a consequence of the lack of understanding of how different screening techniques and instrumentation work.
