Recent research has shown the activation of many immune activation pathways (TLRs) [ 11- 13], inflammatory genes [ 5], antimicrobial peptides and acute phase proteins [ 6, 10] during the early postpartum period.
As demonstrated, many immune-related pathways were significantly over-represented in intermediate and/or advanced lesions including TLR, NK, BCR, FER, APP, CCC and LTEM pathways.
This interpretation follows the observation that many components of immune pathways are activated by abiotic stresses [ 44] and that upregulation of immune responses occurs in ageing Drosophila under sterile conditions, thus with no exposure to pathogens [ 38].
Pathways involving cytoskeletal remodeling, the clathrin-coated endosomal pathway, T-cell receptor signaling and CD28 pathways, and many immune and biological mechanisms were significantly down-regulated, while the ubiquitin pathway and certain others were up-regulated.
