Many pupils' abilities are underestimated – especially in schools in less privileged areas.
Specifically, the cortexes of their brains — the outermost layer of brain cells essential to many thinking abilities — were comparable in size to those of the younger adults in a control group.

The findings, published in the journal Current Biology, show that many cognitive abilities are strongly influenced by genetics — and may help shed light on the rise of intelligence in humans.
The lack of focus on risk aversion reflects an important gap in the aging literature, particularly given that older adults have to make several complex decisions just at a time when, for many, cognitive abilities are beginning to deteriorate.
