Mr. Hartley showed Mr. Stonis how to shift his management style from a production and manufacturing role to a more customer-focused approach.
It is unclear whether this manufacturing role will continue to be as profitable for these companies as it has in the past.
China's manufacturing role can only grow, probably at the expense of older chemical markets, and it represents virgin terrain for such new DuPont businesses as proteins, used to increase the nutritiousness of processed foods.
The administration's priorities reflect a new political consciousness that, if not openly anti-industrial, seems to minimize manufacturing's role in the nation's long-term future.
"As those industries have shorn jobs, the proportion of families with middle incomes has declined," says Douglas Hall, director of the Economic Analysis and Research Institute at the Economic Policy Institute, an economics-based think tank in Washington, D.C. "Manufacturing's role in the economy has changed, and we haven't wrapped our heads around what the implications are".
But it's only when we're ready to discuss the importance of manufacturing's role in our economy -- and the advantages of an open supply chain system to foster innovation, production and distribution -- that we can discuss the realities of a sustainable economic recovery.
Last Friday, manufacturers, universities, associations, and other community and national organizations made a concerted effort to not just educate the public on manufacturing's role in America, but also to help them realize how it's evolved into an innovative and highly skilled working environment.
They are Dr. Remo Gerber, former MD for Western Europe at Gett, who joins Lilium as chief commercial officer; Dirk Gebser, who takes up the position of VP of Production and previously held manufacturing executive roles at Airbus and Rolls Royce; and Meggy Sailer, who joined Lilium as Head of Recruitment in February and was formerly Tesla's Head of Talent EMEA.

The widening deficit also underscores the standing of China as Asia's manufacturing powerhouse, a role once played by Japan.
In a 2001 article titled "Consumer Cities," the Harvard economist Edward Glaeser wrote that since cities are no longer centers for manufacturing, their main role is as stages for shopping and entertainment, conflating the categories of tourists and locals.
