In 1975 Mozambique's industrial and manufacturing sector was typical of much of colonial Africa, being based largely on minimally processed raw materials for export (shrimp, tea, sugar, cashews, citrus, copra, coal, and cotton) combined with processing and light manufacturing of commodities for local consumption.
The channel, 40 feet wide and four feet deep, linked the Hudson River with Lake Erie and made Buffalo a hub of manufacturing and commodities transport.

Innovation and partnerships The solution seems simple enough – manufacture more of these commodities – but ineffective regulation, poor quality oversight and limited or non-existent manufacturing and delivery systems hamper the delivery of commodities to the people who need them most.
"A lot of manufacturing companies buy commodities, and they are not brand names," Mr. Galambos said.
The exchange takes no account of the fact that, for example, some of Apple's overstressed and underpaid workers contemplated suicide in order to escape the penal servitude of manufacturing must-have commodities for you and me.
