Phytoene is desaturated in most bacteria by the phytoene desaturase CrtI to produce lycopene (4 desaturations; Figure 1; [57], [57]) or, in spheroidene and spheroidenone-producing Proteobacteria, neurosporene (3 desaturations; Figure 1; [58]).
