Patients with a history of pelvic floor dyssynergia, the need to use manual maneuvers in order to achieve a bowel movement, surgery of the colon at any time, abdominal surgery within 60 days prior to entry into the study, or laxative abuse were excluded from the study.
The Rome III criteria also include straining, a feeling of incomplete evacuation and manual maneuvers to facilitate defecation.
Also, patients were excluded if they reported the need for manual maneuvers (digital insertion into the rectum, perianal pressure, or vaginal splinting) or frequent use of enemas to evacuate stool.
3– 5 The Rome III criteria use a combination of objective (stool frequency, manual maneuvers needed for defecation) and subjective (straining, lumpy or hard stools, incomplete evacuation, sensation of anorectal obstruction) symptoms to define constipation.
According to the Rome III criteria for constipation, a patient must have experienced at least 2 of the following symptoms over the preceding 3 months with symptom onset at least 6 months before diagnosis: fewer than 3 bowel movements per week, straining, lumpy or hard stools, sensation of anorectal obstruction, sensation of incomplete defecation, and/or manual maneuvering required to defecate.

The Rome III diagnostic criteria use the term functional constipation, defining it based on the frequency of specific bowel symptoms (e.g., straining, lumpy/hard stools, incomplete evacuation, sensation of anorectal obstruction, manual maneuvers for defecation, and ≤3 defecations/week) combined with the requirement that the patient does not meet the criteria for IBS (3).
To be included in the study, participants had to have at least two of the following symptoms on more than 25% of occasions: straining; lumpy or hard stools; a sensation of incomplete evacuation; a sensation of anorectal obstruction/blockage; manual maneuvers to facilitate defecation; or defecation frequency less than three times per week.
