The synthesis of D-mannitol could be perfomed from fructose via a reduction step catalyzed by two NADP-dependent mannitol dehydrogenases [GenBank:EOR01463, GenBank:EOQ99146] as was previously described also for the basidiomycete Agaricus bisporus[ 43].
Olive leaf contains important amounts of oleanolic acid, oleuropein and mannitol, whose recovery could be interesting for the pharmaceutical, cosmetics and food industries.
Mannitol levels could not be detected in the wild-type plants, but the presence of mannitol in the transgenics could be positively correlated with the disease resistance.
The effects of glucose appear to be mediated by hyperosmotic stress since similar, though weaker, effects could be observed using mannitol.

Although BS could be alleviated by mannitol infusion even without craniotomy, a subset of patients with malignant BS after TBI could not be easily manageable, and diffuse unilateral or bilateral BS has definitive correlation with clinical deterioration with brain herniation [ 5, 13- 17].
Thus, at 24 h of transfer, atrazine-treated plantlets could be compared to mannitol-treated, sucrose-treated, and sucrose plus atrazine-treated plantlets which had not yet undergone significant developmental changes resulting from the treatment and were therefore in a comparable physiological state (Additional file 1).
