A 1965 article in Playboy by Shel Silverstein - "Footloose Shel visits the gay side of Gotham's offshore bohemia" – was the first portrait of a gay community in the area, but it was in the 1970s that its legend was secured after it played host to a number of mammoth disco events.
During 1838 1845, Dr. John Croghan, the owner of Mammoth Cave, brought a number of people with tuberculosis into the cave in the hope of curing the disease with the constant temperature and purity of the cave air; they died within a year.
(A small number of mammoths may have persisted on Russia's Wrangel Island in the Arctic Ocean until as recently as 2,000 years ago).
Instead, rising sea levels following the end of the last ice age shrunk the island, reducing the number of mammoths it could support.
Paleontologist Daniel Fisher of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, is skeptical, however, noting that the study included only a small number of mammoths and that inbreeding could be purely a result of dwindling population rather than a cause.
There does not seem to be a correlation between the number of mammoths depicted and the species that were most often hunted, since reindeer bones are the most frequently found animal remains at the site.
But while some of the ivory they found being carved or sold was being traded legally – including an increasing number of prehistoric mammoth tusks imported from Russia – most lacked legally required documentation, and many traders were unregistered.
This first conference is set for September 25-26th, and will take place at San Francisco's Moscone West — the same hall that houses Google I/O, WWDC, and a number of other mammoth events.

For example, a 2012 study suggested that mammoths died out for a number of reasons, including both climate change and human hunting, and a study published this year in the journal Evolution found that the last few mammoth survivors were under great stress, perhaps from disease or inbreeding.
