While the behaviour of tarantulas can vary, many make burrows in soil and feed mainly at night on insects and occasionally small frogs, toads, and mice.
Some remaining mammals, such as the gophers of North American mountains, take advantage of the insulated environment beneath the snow where they make burrows and feed on subterranean plant organs.
